Omega Watch History

Today, seven out of ten people throughout the world are familiar with the OMEGA watch brand - a truly amazing rate of awareness to which few other watch brands can lay claim. The reason behind this success is said to be the reliably fine quality of every OMEGA watch. From its modest beginnings in La Chaux-de-Fonds in 1848 the assembly workshop created by 23-year-old Louis Brandt gradually gained renown. Louis Brandt assembled key-wound precision pocket watches from parts supplied by local craftsmen. After Louis Brandt's death in 1879, his two sons Louis-Paul and Cesar took over control of the business. Louis-Paul and César Brandt both died in 1903, leaving one of Switzerland's largest watch companies - with 240,000 watches produced annually and employing 800 people - in the hands of four young people, the oldest of whom was Paul-Emile Brandt. The economic difficulties brought on by the First World War would lead him to work actively from 1925 toward the union of OMEGA and Tissot then to their merger in 1930 within the group SSIH. By the seventies, SSIH had become Switzerland's no 1 producer of finished watches and no 3 in the world. The severe monetary crisis and recession of 1975 to 1980, SSIH was bailed out by the banks in 1981. In 1985 the holding company was taken over by a group of private investors. Immediately renamed SMH, Societe suisse de microelectronique et d'horlogerie, the new group achieved rapid growth and success to become today's top watch producer in the world. Named Swatch Group in 1998, it now includes Blancpain and Breguet. Dynamic and flourishing, OMEGA remains one of its most prestigious flagship brands. 1st March 1965 - OMEGA's Speedmaster chronograph was "flight-qualified by NASA for all manned space missions" as the only wristwatch to have withstood all of the U.S. space agency's severe tests. On 21 July 1969 - 02:56 GMT, the Speedmaster records man's first steps on the Moon's surface. The Speedmaster became the first watch (and the only watch since) to be worn on the Moon. With this unique accomplishment came a unique nickname: the Moon Watch. April 1970 - the OMEGA Speedmaster rescued the Apollo 13 mission from a potential disaster, earning OMEGA the "Snoopy Award". 1948 saw the advent of the Seamaster, Seamaster 300 in 1957, In 1981, the newly launched Seamaster 120 set a new world free dive record at a depth of 101 metres. The Seamaster is also famous for being the choice watch for James Bond.

Omega Seamaster De Ville 1967 - £ 200 GBP

This is a lovely Seamaster De Ville from the 60's. It was presented to someone in 1967 and has an inscription on the back engraved around the edge of usual embossed Seamaster logo. The dial is excellent with just extremely minor specking fully consistent with age. The crystal is clear and free from blemishes. The s/s strap is not Omega although it is a dead ringer for the original stainless one which would have come with this watch. I suspect the strap may even be original but the clasp arrangement has been replaced with a close generic copy without Omega markings. This Seamaster comes in a waterproof one piece case so the movement cannot be inspected but rest assured the watch works well. PRICE REDUCTION

Omega 1947 Cal. 30T2 - £ 295 GBP

A recently restored Omega including expensive dial restoration, this watch is in wonderful condition and dates from just after WW2. The military connections are strong with this piece as it features the famous 30T2 calibre movement fitted to Omega's military watches during this time.

Due to its exceptional flexibility, its regulating performance, its robustness and ease of maintenance, this legendary calibre was for Swiss-quality Gentleman's wrist watches what, from 1894, the 19" had been for pocket-watches of the period. Extensive research enabled ideally proportioned components to be used, which accounted for its top quality performance. The surface area of the barrel and the balance was designed to be as wide as possible to allow a first class regulating performance. The most efficient transmission of power was found by paying meticulous attention to the dimensions of the gears: the smallest escapement possible was used for such a high quality calibre. The 30 mm would mark the history of watchmaking for a quarter of a century, from 1939 to 1963. This was reflected in the fact that its first big customer was none less than the British army who ordered the watch en masse during the Second World War to equip its sea and land troops as well as its RAF pilots (110 000 watches in total, which accounted for more than half its total sales at the Swiss watchmakers). In chronometer testing, it continued to make its mark until 1967, the last year of the competitions at which, thanks to its incredible precision, it reigned supreme practically since its launch! The stainless case is by Dennsion and in lovely refurbished condition, the glass is polished and perfect.

This Omega is simply beautiful and has been the subject of a complete recent professional restoration. A 1952 Seamaster with the sought after Cal. 354 bumper movement and even more sought after black dial. The movement was later replaced by more efficient self winding mechanisms and its limited run means its now highly prized by Omega collectors. The mint black dial is accompanied by gold batons lettering and gold dauphine hands. The case has been completely refurbished with correct sensitive polishing and satinising on the key surfaces and looks like new complete with original indented Omega crown. Quadruple signed Omega, the glass even has the Omega logo which you can just about be seen in the pictures. Needless to say it has been serviced and timekeeping is excellent. Omega Seamaster F300 Chronometer - £ 295 GBP

This a special Omega and is at the heart of the transition between mechanical and quartz watches. Circa 1973 this transition watch features the famous Bulova tuning fork movement made famous in the Accutron watch. Omega launched the F300 Chronometer range using this movement made by ESA under licence from Bulova and stamped / branded Omega. A miniature tuning fork provides the rock steady 300 Hz regulating signal which keeps the time keeping of the integrated circuit in check. The accuracy of these is amazing and was a match for the finest mechanical chronometers with lower production costs. If you hold the watch to your ear you will hear it hum and the sweep motion of the second hand is continuous. This watch keeps time within 5 seconds a day so is well within the limits of the official Chronometer rating (+/-8sec day). Its in superb condition with a gently repolished case with traditional Seahorse logo, original crown, perfect original Omega signed crystal and mint dial with red F300 motif. Just fitted with a fresh battery this is a real collectors piece.

Omega Speedmaster Professional (Moonwatch) 1972 - £ 850 GBP

This watch needs no introduction and is instantly recognisable to collector's as a Moonwatch. The Omega Speedmaster Professional is probably the most famous Chronograph ever made because it was chosen by NASA for the space programme and famously the first watch worn on the moon by Neil Armstrong on the Apollo XI mission in 1969. It was also used later on the ill fated Apollo XIII mission where the chonograph function was used to time the manual 10 second 'burn' to establish orbit for re-entry following complete failure of the capsule's navigational systems. This version has existed since 1963 and is still sold by Omega today. This particular watch dates from 1972 just three years after the moon landing a fact celebrated with the engraved rear cover 'The first watch worn on the moon'. It is in superb condition for its age with a mint black dial and excellent condition case. The glass is the original Omega signed Acrylic crystal polished and blemish free. The black bezel has a few marks but nothing too serious. The original bracelet has been refurbished to look almost new leaving only minor residual scratches on the clasp through normal wear. It will fit a wrist size up to 19cm. All chronograph functions work perfectly. The movement is the manually wound Omega Cal. 861 made by Lemania. Diameter 41mm.

These early models are known amongst collectors as Smoothback models and predate the more common Seahorse logo engraved back seen on later models. The original dial has a rare two tone design with some minor ageing but nothing serious. The original Omega signed glass still remains along with original 4 indented crown so often replaced on these watches. The movement is an Omega signed automatic 20J calibre 501 with the familiar Omega copper plate finish. A beautiful vintage watch and amongst the most collectable of Omega watches. Omega Seamaster Automatic Cal. 501 circa 1958 - £ 315 GBP

We have been lucky enough to sell some fine vintage Seamsters over the past months and we never keep them on the site long due to their popularity amongst collectors. This one has just been restored and is a fine example of the 'smoothback' Seamaster so called becuase it pre dates the famous engraved Seahorse logo on the caseback of Omega watches. The case is in superb condition and has been sensitively repolished and satinised to its current immaculate condition. Inside the back reveals that this one was made by Dennison for Omega. The dial condition is excellent having been gently cleaned and a new coat of Horolacq applied to protect the finish . This process involves careful removal of the old oxidised coating but retains the original silver dial basecoat and Omega lettering and seals it under a clear coating of special lacquer similar to the original prevent future tarnishing and oxidisation. The hands have been polished and reluminised. The original crown has a small wear mark and the original Omega signed crystal is retained and has been thoroughly abraded and repolished to a fine shine to restore to new condition. The movement is Omega's automatic cal. 501 20J serial no. 16,3**,*** dating it to 1958. It is working perfectly and keeping time. A fine vintage Omega. Diameter 34mm.

Omega 1943 Bumper - Rare Model - £ 415 GBP

This Omega is something of a rarity and an important watch for Omega collectors. Circa 1943 the stainless steel case is heavily 40's styled and has an unusual two piece back with inner center plate signed Omega inside and outer securing press on ring instead of the more usual single piece snap on cover. The inner back plate has a copper sealing ring but my guess is this design was replaced for the more waterproof and robust heavy snap on type seen in the early 50's on Smoothback Seamasters. The two tone silver dial is a work of art with its classic 40's heavy luminised numerals and numbered minute graduations around the perimter. Its difficult to believe how clean it looks for the age of watch and is possible the dial has been restored at some stage. The work is of such quality though that this seems unlikely and I would not be surprised to find it has just been kept out of harms way for many years. The correct 40's style crown is sigend Omega. The movement is a collector's dream being the first production Automatic that Omega produced. Cal. 330 , the bumper, so called for its half size rotor moving through 180 degrees to strike back and forth against the end springs. Its in lovely condition and working beautifully keeping time, s/n 9,8**,8** dating it to 1943. The price reflects the rarity fo this stunning piece. Diameter 35mm.

Omega www Military circa 1944 - £ 450 GBP

One of the most famous Omega's and seen in any authorative work on Omega watches. Many thousands were made for second world war service but few remain in working order let alone in such good original condition as this one. The 10,6**,*** serial number dates it to 1944 and it has the correct 30T2 movement developed specifically for this military application which is in good condition and keeping time. The stainless steel case is sharp and has not been over polished carrying the original finishing. The dial is original which is something of a rarity on these. I suspect the watch has seen little action and has been tucked away in a draw for many years. The broad'arrow' hands are in fine condition as is the over large crown which winds nicely. The watch is fitted with a NATO style military strap. Case diameter 34mm. This is a lovely watch and one that is rising rapidly in value. Many of these military omegas are now faked from bits and pieces, This is a genuine piece.

Omega Seamaster Calendar Bumper circa 1954 - £ 375 GBP

This watch needs no introduction amongst collectors, a vintage Omega Seamaster Calendar Automatic with calibre 355 Bumper movement from 1954. Sometimes known as the smoothback Seamaster this model pre-dates the legendary Sea horse logo found on all later Seamaster watches and has a discreet Seamaster and Waterproof engraved in the rear of the case. This model is the rarer calendar version with aperture at 6 o clock. The watch has been completely overhauled and restored including a complete dial restoration by Omega specialist dial restorers David R Bill & Sons. As a result it looks fantastic and almost as new with only minor marks left to the case following its refurbishment. The original and correct indented crown remains (so often replaced with a later type) along with the original Omega signed crystal, polished and blemish free. The Bumper movement was so called because of the action of the half rotor bumping against the springs to provide power to wind the movement. It was soon replaced with more efficient automatic calibres with full rotors but its early demise marks an important transition for collectors. Calibre 355, the movement has been checked and serviced and is working superbly. Diameter 33mm. A rare opportunity

Omega 30T2 circa 1944 - £ 295 GBP

The Omega 30T2 calibre needs no introduction to collectors. Originally conceived in 1939 it became the timekeeping mainstay of the Britsh armed forces during WWII where it gained a formidable reputation for its robustness. This watch dates from 1944 and its styling shows clearly its military links. The stainless case is in superb condition. The dial is original with some ageing and a few minor servcing marks, very consistent with age. The 15J movement is working well with the large balance wheel spinning freely. These early movements were always chrome plated, later replaced by the copper coloured finishing more familar to vintage Omega's. Diameter 34mm

The Speedmaster legend lives on

Broad Arrow was the name given to the hands that told the time on the original OMEGA Speedmaster in 1957. Since then, the Speedmaster has become a watchmaking legend and has been on every US manned space flight, on the moon, on MIR and now on the International Space Station. We have named our new automatic chronograph in honour of these famous hands: the Speedmaster Broad Arrow.

Master Watchmakers at OMEGA have developed an exclusive and totally new chronograph movement, which is also a COSC-certified chronometer. Its column wheel mechanism ensures very high precision in operating the various functions, and is the sign of a truly superior chronograph. The Broad Arrow will perpetuate the Speedmaster legend well into the 21st century.

The movement

'OMEGA's exclusive 3303 calibre is an entirely new development both in terms of design and manufacture. This automatic chronograph is a certified COSC chronometer with a generous power reserve of 55 hours. Its vertical clutch delivers a smooth start of the chronograph hand, and its stop-second system facilitates synchronising the watch with a time signal. The movement is also distinguished by the highly advanced column-wheel mechanism and the OMEGA free sprung-balance system which is highly shock-resistant and provides greater stability.'

The hands: the character of the watch

These unique hands were designed for the first OMEGA Speedmaster in 1957. The hour hand in particular gives the watch its distinctive appearance. They are offered in blued steel, rhodium-plated, or in 18-carat gold.

The dial: the face of the Speedmaster

The facetted hour markers are also a reminder of the original Speedmaster. In 18 ct gold, steel, or rhodium-plated, they are sufficiently luminous to be easily readable, even at night.
