 Omega Watch History
Today, seven out of ten people throughout the world are familiar with the OMEGA watch brand - a truly amazing rate of awareness to which few other watch brands can lay claim. The reason behind this success is said to be the reliably fine quality of every OMEGA watch. From its modest beginnings in La Chaux-de-Fonds in 1848 the assembly workshop created by 23-year-old Louis Brandt gradually gained renown. Louis Brandt assembled key-wound precision pocket watches from parts supplied by local craftsmen. After Louis Brandt's death in 1879, his two sons Louis-Paul and Cesar took over control of the business.
Louis-Paul and César Brandt both died in 1903, leaving one of Switzerland's largest watch companies - with 240,000 watches produced annually and employing 800 people - in the hands of four young people, the oldest of whom was Paul-Emile Brandt. The economic difficulties brought on by the First World War would lead him to work actively from 1925 toward the union of OMEGA and Tissot then to their merger in 1930 within the group SSIH. By the seventies, SSIH had become Switzerland's no 1 producer of finished watches and no 3 in the world. The severe monetary crisis and recession of 1975 to 1980, SSIH was bailed out by the banks in 1981. In 1985 the holding company was taken over by a group of private investors. Immediately renamed SMH, Societe suisse de microelectronique et d'horlogerie, the new group achieved rapid growth and success to become today's top watch producer in the world. Named Swatch Group in 1998, it now includes Blancpain and Breguet. Dynamic and flourishing, OMEGA remains one of its most prestigious flagship brands.
1st March 1965 - OMEGA's Speedmaster chronograph was \"flight-qualified by NASA for all manned space missions\" as the only wristwatch to have withstood all of the U.S. space agency's severe tests. On 21 July 1969 - 02:56 GMT, the Speedmaster records man's first steps on the Moon's surface. The Speedmaster became the first watch (and the only watch since) to be worn on the Moon. With this unique accomplishment came a unique nickname: the Moon Watch. April 1970 - the OMEGA Speedmaster rescued the Apollo 13 mission from a potential disaster, earning OMEGA the \"Snoopy Award\".
1948 saw the advent of the Seamaster, Seamaster 300 in 1957, In 1981, the newly launched Seamaster 120 set a new world free dive record at a depth of 101 metres. The Seamaster is also famous for being the choice watch for James Bond.

An Omega Gents manual wind watch dating from the 1944. The stainless steel Omega signed screw back case is in excellent condition. The dial with auxiliary seconds dial at 6 o'clock position has some spotting but completely original. Circa WWII Omegas are exceptionally collectable and this watch has a hidden twist. Removing the back and inner dust cover reveals a rectangular form movement cal. R 17.5mm. This practice of using rectangular movements in circular cases has been well documented notably in 'Omega Designs' by Kreuzer. The reasons for doing so are less clear but given the austerity of the war years and simplicity of design it may well have been a cunning way to utilise existing stock of form factor movements normally seen in decorative rectangular cased watches of earlier years. It is presented on a genuine brown pigskin strap. Watch measures 31mm in diameter. Very rare and collectable Omega |

 | Omega cal.30.10RA 'bumper' c.1943
- £ 450 GBP
A rare Omega bumper calibre 30.10RA. This was the first Automatic calibre Omega produced in 1942, famous for it's 'hammer' or bumper rotor which wound the mainspring by the centre mounted weight bumping on the buffer springs. It went through a couple of revisions and later became the more commonly known cal. 330. As such the pre-'standardised' calibres are very sought after amongst collectors. The large diameter case (36mm) is also unusual not only for its huge size for the period but it's 4 piece design consisting of centre chassis and lugs, bezel, rear cover and rear clip on bezel. It's in wonderful condition with no major dents or scratches, signed Omega ref. 2374. The dial is ageing wonderful, slightly creamy silver with railtrack on the inside edge of the numerals. Plain crown which we believe to be correct and original for this period and polished crystal. The movement is cal. 30.10RA, s/n 98*,*** dating circa 1943, some plating loss to the hammer rotor but mechanically sound, winding the mainspring perfectly (although never to modern half rotor levels of efficiency), running well and keeping excellent time. The Speedmaster legend lives on
Broad Arrow was the name given to the hands that told the time on the original OMEGA Speedmaster in 1957. Since then, the Speedmaster has become a watchmaking legend and has been on every US manned space flight, on the moon, on MIR and now on the International Space Station. We have named our new automatic chronograph in honour of these famous hands: the Speedmaster Broad Arrow.
Master Watchmakers at OMEGA have developed an exclusive and totally new chronograph movement, which is also a COSC-certified chronometer. Its column wheel mechanism ensures very high precision in operating the various functions, and is the sign of a truly superior chronograph. The Broad Arrow will perpetuate the Speedmaster legend well into the 21st century.
The movement 'OMEGA's exclusive 3303 calibre is an entirely new development both in terms of design and manufacture. This automatic chronograph is a certified COSC chronometer with a generous power reserve of 55 hours. Its vertical clutch delivers a smooth start of the chronograph hand, and its stop-second system facilitates synchronising the watch with a time signal.
The movement is also distinguished by the highly advanced column-wheel mechanism and the OMEGA free sprung-balance system which is highly shock-resistant and provides greater stability.'
The hands: the character of the watch
These unique hands were designed for the first OMEGA Speedmaster in 1957. The hour hand in particular gives the watch its distinctive appearance. They are offered in blued steel, rhodium-plated, or in 18-carat gold.
The dial: the face of the Speedmaster
The facetted hour markers are also a reminder of the original Speedmaster. In 18 ct gold, steel, or rhodium-plated, they are sufficiently luminous to be easily readable, even at night.

 | Omega Split Seconds Chronograph Model. 34505000
- £ 1690 GBP
The split seconds chronograph represents one of the top line speedmaster models and as such remains a special order item to UK Omega dealers with a long waiting list. The split seconds feature is achieved with two independant chronograph hands allowing the first to be stopped at the 'split' time and the second recording the final time. Needless to say with the additional 3 registers, the mechanical movement in this watch is of extreme complication and workmanship.
The dial is made of weaved carbon fibre, case is stainless steel, with familiar speedmaster emblems and push button release Speedmaster signed bracelet. This watch is dated May 2003 and has just returned from Omega HQ in Switzerland having undergone a complete overhaul and cosmetic refinish as part of a claim under warranty. It is basically a brand new watch having been fitted with a brand new bezel, case back and Omega professional bracelet refinish. It also comes with a brand new 12 month transferable warranty from Omega with supporting documentaition from swatch group uk (Omega). Current list price of this model is ?2500 and this watch is indistinguishable from new. it comes complete with its offical UK dealer stamped warranty card, hangtag, booklets and Omega inner and outer boxes.

 | Omega 30T2 circa 1944
- £ 295 GBP
The Omega 30T2 calibre needs no introduction to collectors. Originally conceived in 1939 it became the timekeeping mainstay of the Britsh armed forces during WWII where it gained a formidable reputation for its robustness. The 30 mm would mark the history of watchmaking for a quarter of a century, from 1939 to 1963. This was reflected in the fact that its first big customer was none less than the British army who ordered the watch en masse during the Second World War to equip its sea and land troops as well as its RAF pilots (110 000 watches in total, which accounted for more than half its total sales at the Swiss watchmakers). In chronometer testing, it continued to make its mark until 1967, the last year of the competitions at which, thanks to its incredible precision, it reigned supreme practically since its launch! This watch dates from 1944 and its styling shows clearly its military links. The stainless case is in superb condition. The dial is original with some ageing and a few minor servcing marks, very consistent with age. The 15J movement is working well with the large balance wheel spinning freely. These early movements were always chrome plated, later replaced by the copper coloured finishing more familar to vintage Omega's. Diameter 34mm |

 | Omega Constellation cal. 501 circa 1956
- £ 220 GBP
This is an exciting watch for Omega collectors as it is one of the first Constellations to feature the full rotor automatic movement, cal. 501 introduced in 1956 to replace the hammer type (bumper) auto movement. This watch is in good condition with and original dial but not a mint piece which would command much higher values. The stainless case is in excellent condition with only minor marks. It has also been recently polished. A gold embossed observatory logo is on the caseback. The original dial is in excellent condition for its age with just minor ageing and a few very minor marks near the centre. The crystal is polished and unblemished and the correct original Omega Constellation 8 sided crown is present. The movement is calibre 501 adj. to 5 positions 19 jewel. It has suffered some cosmetic plating loss due to servicing over many years and the auto rotor shows some wear causing a slight rattle when shaken. The movement has been inspected and serviced and is mechanically sound, winds manually, and by the rotor which spins freely. It keeps excellent time and can be worn continuously for days wihout manual winding with the rotor maintaining power to the mainspring. Bargain price for a good useable Constellation. Diameter 34mm |

The original indented Omega crown is retained so often lost and replaced with the standard milled Omega item. The movement is calibre 501, 19J automatic used in adjusted chronometer form on the Constellation of the same era. It is working well and in excellent condition retaining its famous glorious copper finishing. Also fitted with a genuine Croc skin strap in good serviceable condition. Diameter 33mm. |

 | Omega Seamaster Calendar Bumper circa 1954
- £ 375 GBP
This watch needs no introduction amongst collectors, a vintage Omega Seamaster Calendar Automatic with calibre 355 Bumper movement from 1954. Sometimes known as the smoothback Seamaster this model pre-dates the legendary Sea horse logo found on all later Seamaster watches and has a discreet Seamaster and Waterproof engraved in the rear of the case. This model is the rarer calendar version with aperture at 6 o clock. The watch has been completely overhauled and restored including a complete dial restoration by Omega specialist dial restorers David R Bill & Sons. As a result it looks fantastic and almost as new with only minor marks left to the case following its refurbishment. The original and correct indented crown remains (so often replaced with a later type) along with the original Omega signed crystal, polished and blemish free. The Bumper movement was so called because of the action of the half rotor bumping against the springs to provide power to wind the movement. It was soon replaced with more efficient automatic calibres with full rotors but its early demise marks an important transition for collectors. Calibre 355, the movement has been checked and serviced and is working superbly. Diameter 33mm. A rare opportunity |

 | Omega www Military circa 1944
- £ 450 GBP
One of the most famous Omega's and seen in any authorative work on Omega watches. Many thousands were made for second world war service but few remain in working order let alone in such good original condition as this one. The 10,6**,*** serial number dates it to 1944 and it has the correct 30T2 movement developed specifically for this military application which is in good condition and keeping time. The stainless steel case is sharp and has not been over polished carrying the original finishing. The dial is original which is something of a rarity on these. I suspect the watch has seen little action and has been tucked away in a draw for many years. The broad'arrow' hands are in fine condition as is the over large crown which winds nicely. The watch is fitted with a NATO style military strap. Case diameter 34mm. This is a lovely watch and one that is rising rapidly in value. Many of these military omegas are now faked from bits and pieces, This is a genuine piece. |

 | Omega 1950 Bumper Automatic
- £ 395 GBP
A quite exceptional watch dating from 1950 this Omega has the famous Cal. 342 Bumper movement so called for its automatic winding mechanism that swings with the movement of the watch and bumps against a spring at either end of its travel. The movement was later replaced by more efficient winding mechanisms and its limited run means its now highly prized by Omega collectors. The near mint condition dial is one of the finest I have seen from Omega with its highly styled numerals and railtrack design on the perimeter. The stainless case in superb condition with the correct original Omega signed crown and featuring the bevelled undecorated smoothback later seen on the Seamaster. Its also fitted with a new green leather strap and a stainless Omega buckle of similar vintage. Very rare to find a watch like this is such wonderful condition. Diameter 34mm. |
